ABOUT me

MONICA RICHEY MSN, ANP-BC/GNP, BSN

I am an Adult Rheumatology Nurse Practitioner with over 14 years of experience. I was trained at Hospital for Special surgery by the top rheumatologist in the country. I have a special focus on Lupus and lupus related diseases.

At HSS I worked within the Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Care while working at the Center, I participated in several projects that highlighted the importance of preventive medicine for patients with rheumatic diseases. I was the nurse practitioner for the cardiovascular disease program that held educational sessions to teach patients about their risk of developing heart disease with a focus on developing a personalized plan of care for each individual.
On the Preventive Initiative, patients were regularly reminded of the need for certain screening tests such as mammograms, colonoscopy, pap-smear and other. Also to help them attain good health they were reminded to check for their vitamin D level as well as other important markers. The goal was to see the patients in a more holistic way and not so focus on the disease itself.

I also work with patient with several other diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis as well as the most common of the all: Osteoarthritis. While working at the Osteoarthritis center I learn a homeopathic approach to the treatment of osteoarthritis that includes supplement, diet modification and exercise.
I am also part of the Rheumatology Nurses Society as an advocate member. I believe that patient advocacy is at the center of the nursing profession and an integral part of patient care.
I have written articles with a focus on alternative/ complementary medicine for patients with rheumatic disease. They emphasize the need for patients to be active participants in their care and to help patients care for themselves when away from the physician’s office.

I believe that the more a patient knows about their disease, the more they can do to maintain their mental and physical health.
As a nurse faculty at Bronx Community College, my goal and to help my students not only understand the disease but also how to help the patients overcome their own limitations through education and participation on their medical care.
